Theme 1: Taking Strategic Leadership Seriously

$3 million is wasted every minute due to failed strategy implementation. It’s time to take strategy implementation seriously and apply the leadership necessary to get things done. That means building a sound bridge between strategy and implementation and, having done that, lead the crossing of the bridge towards successful strategic performance.

08.45 - 09.00 Taking strategic leadership seriously
Bjarni S. Jonsson,
Co-Founder and CSO DecideAct

$3 million is wasted every minute due to failed strategy implementation. It’s time to take strategy implementation seriously and apply the leadership necessary to get things done. That means building a sound bridge between strategy and implementation and, having done that, lead the crossing of the bridge towards successful strategic performance.

09.00 - 09.20 Bridging the gap between strategy design and delivery
Tahirou Assane Oumarou
, Director of Operations for the Brightline Initiative

Practices can change, business models are disrupted, technology evolves, but principles do not change. They are the soul of strategy design and delivery. Brightline has crafted a set of 10 guiding principles to help leaders shrink the costly and wasteful gap between strategy design and delivery. These principles are for us both a moral rule and a basic truth.

If we want to make our dreams of a better world come true, we need to understand that the line that connects strategy design and delivery is blurred. Let’s replace it with a Brightline!

09.20 - 09.40 Transforming against crisis
Dr. Qingqing Han
, Head of Partnership for the Brightline Initiative

A hack that exposes millions of customers’ data. A major holiday product launch pushed into next year. A chairman’s immediate dismissal for misconduct. An employee’s misstep gone viral. The circumstances of a corporation’s next major crisis vary, but its appearance is inevitable.  Less inevitable, however, is a company finding a positive outcome in the wake of a crisis. While of course, no leader would ever wish for the crisis, it doesn’t need to spell disaster. On the contrary: the Brightline research on "Learning from Crisis Mode" suggests that it’s possible for certain opportunities to emerge from crisis and have a lasting positive influence on a business. A crisis can bring out the best in your staff, unearth improvements in processes, and reveal new business opportunities, all of which can—and should—influence post-crisis strategy design and implementation.

09.40 - 10.00 Execution Success Begins with Better Planning, Even When Your Execution Plan is Disrupted.
Jim Stockmal,
President of the Association for Strategic Planning (ASP)

Research has shown across multiple sectors that the more successful organizations take time to plan - even if a disruption occurs during execution. Continuous environmental scanning, scenario planning, double-loop learning, and rapid re-planning will help you understand what happened, why it happened and what to do next to get back on track for your long term strategy.

10.00 - 10.20 From nothing to global brand: Transforming nature into unique experience
Grímur Sæmundsen,
Blue Lagoon Iceland

Grímur will share his journey from using tents by a surplus water reservoir at a geothermal power plant to becoming a global brand and an icon in the Icelandic travel and leisure industry. About strategy failure and success, and why resilience and rigorous focus is a must. A highly personal story.

10.20 - 10.40 Building the bridge
Birna Einarsdóttir,
Chief Executive Officer at Islandsbanki

Being the CEO of one of Iceland’s major banks, Birna is just now faced with the task of implementing a newly designed strategy in face of a challenging future for banking. She will outline the major hands-on issues which are faced in a situation like that.
